Buttermere, Crummock Water & Loweswater

If I had to have a favourite lake, it would have to be Buttermere. It’s a real gem and still relatively quiet compared to some of the other lakes. There’s also a farm tea shop in the village where you can buy fantastic homemade ice-cream! Lake Buttermere is 1.5 miles long by 0.75 mile wide and you can walk all the way round the water's edge. Red Pike looms over the lake and village of the same name and its peak at 2,479ft is one of the best vantage points in the whole Lake District from which you can see five lakes. A walk around the lake takes just a couple of hour and there are some ideal picnic spots along the way. To the northwest is the beautiful Crummock Water, which is often unjustifiably overlooked in favour of Buttermere. The lake has a great walk along its edge, which ends with the 125ft Scale Force. Nearby is the compact village of Loweswater and Loweswater Lake which is unique within the Lake District as it is the only lake that drains towards the centre of Lakeland - to Crummock Water. You can hire rowing boats from the southeast side of the Lake at Watergate Farm from which you can fish or just enjoy the scenery in this tranquil corner of the Lake District.
