Grasmere & Rydal Water
Grasmere is a small lake which lies alongside the village that shares its name. It was popularised by William Wordsworth who composed much of his poetry during walks around it and its surrounding fells whilst living at nearby Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount. Along the southern shore of the lake runs Loughrigg Terrace, a popular walking route with good views over the lake to Helm Crag known locally as The Lion and the Lamb due to the rock formations on its summit. To the east of Grasmere is another small lake, Rydal Water. There are some lovely walks around it, especially the one that travels to Grasmere past Rydal Caves. There is a rocky outcrop at the western end of the lake which is thought to have been one of Wordsworth's favourite places and has been given the name of Wordsworth's Seat.
