Crinkle Crags and Bowfell from the base of Great Knot

Program Three in Series 2 saw Julia reach the summits of the two peaks of Crinkle Crags and Bowfell. She ascended Crinkle Crags by the route from Great Langdale up to Red Tarn, crossed the Crinkles to Three Tarns and then ascended Bowfell via the Climber’s Traverse. This is a long walk with extensive views taking in many of the high Lakeland fells. The ascent up to Red Tarn is steep, the initial part now being paved, which makes it easier to get your footing but a little hard on the knees. The crossing of Crinkle Crags is rough and stony and takes in the notorious ‘bad step’ which Wainwright said was likely to be one of the most difficult obstacles you would be likely to meet on one of his walks. The view from Three Tarns across to Scafell is delightful and the climb to Bowfell via the Climber’s Traverse a little worrying before you begin it but fine once it’s underfoot. Descend via The Band for a great circular walk.
