Favourite Lakeland Walks
Skiddaw from Latrigg
September 30th 2008
This walk is very close to where we have our holiday lodge in Bassenthwaite so, of course, it’s a much walked favourite.
I usually start the walk from the car park on Gale Road beside Madden Dodd at the head of a minor road near Ormanthwaite just outside Keswick. I go through a gate at the top end of the Car Park, turn left and walk towards a kissing gate then continue to another gate. You then pass a Stone Cross (Hawell Memorial) and follow the line of the fence, which soon leads to a wide, clear gravelled path leading up the mountain.
Pass through another gate then continue up a zig-zag path that is the steepest section of this walk. The summit peak ahead is Little Man but your route veers right just before that summit approach and goes through a gate and along a gentle incline pointing towards Skiddaw. At the end of this gentle incline you go through a gate and climb up to a cairn. From here a row of cairns accompanies the path to the summit ridge and along the ridge to the summit itself.
On a clear day, from the summit of what is Lakeland’s 4th highest peak there are commanding views of Keswick, Derwentwater and Buttermere. You also get a fine panorama of Lakeland’s highest ranges, including Scafell Pike and Helvellyn.
