Haystacks reflections in Buttermere
June 1st 2007
I have climbed Haystacks many times, both in good and bad weather. On a good day, you can see right along the Buttermere Valley across Crummock Water and on to the Solway Firth. I usually set off from Gatesgarth, climbing via Scarth Gap to Haystacks summit. This was Wainwright’s most beloved fell. At his request, his wife Betty scattered his ashes by Innominate Tarn and this always comes to mind as I sit in the shelter of the rocks by the tarn having my packed lunch. It really is a lovely resting place with views swooping down to Buttermere on one side and across to Great Gable and the Scafell Massif in the other direction.
