Favourite Lakeland Walks
Castle Crag and Derwentwater
July 8th 2007
When the clouds are down, a good low fell walk that I like to do is the ascent of Castle Crag which lies between Seatoller and Grange. Starting from Grange, I walk along the banks of the River Derwent in Low Hows Wood heading for the cutting between Castle Crag and High Scawdel. At the top of the pass (from where this image was taken) I then climb left up the steep slope to reach the summit of Castle Crag through the remains of the slate mines that give the summit its distinctive character. From the summit, there is a splendid view, both north and south, that encompasses the whole of Borrowdale.
