Above the clouds on the footpath to Catbells
February 4th 2007
The a ascent of Catbells is a great walk with excellent views across Derwentwater to Skiddaw and Blencathra and down to the Newlands Valley and the hamlet of Little Town familiar to Beatrix Potter readers as the territory of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle.
I like to begin this walk by taking the launch from Keswick to Hawse End. From there you walk up through the woods and out onto the road to follow the signs directing you to the footpath for Catbells. A steady climb takes you up the ridge. Once on the first summit, the main summit is clearly visible to the south and after a walk through a dip, this is soon reached. This is an excellent place to eat your packed lunch, but beware; the sheep on Catbells are very partial to sandwiches!
