Memories on the Wall
Striding Edge, Helvellyn
September 4th 2005
Two sharp arêtes lead off the summit of Helvellyn - Striding Edge and Swirral Edge. They run either side of Red Tarn. The knife-edged Striding Edge provides one of the best-known scrambles in Lakeland. It can be very dangerous in icy or windy conditions but in fine weather it’s an exciting challenge for anyone with a head for heights.
On this occasion we’d climbed up from Thirlspot. After sharing our lunch with the colony of sheep at the summit, I took this image looking down onto Striding Edge. It’s a very popular image with walkers who come in to my Keswick exhibitions. It’s always nice to look back on a walk that you can feel proud that you’ve done.
