Autumn sunshine at Friars Crag, Derwentwater

September 9th 2006

Friars Crag is a promontory jutting into Derwentwater on a stretch of shore about half a mile from the boat landings at Keswick. The view from it was described by John Ruskin as one of the three most beautiful scenes in Europe. It got its name because it was believed to be the embarkment point for monks making a pilgrimage to St Herbert’s Island just south west of the crag.
I had tried to capture the crag on several occasions but for some reason it had never quite turned out how I wanted it to. It’s a justifiably popular spot and there are always lots of people around. The only time to really get a clear shot of it is very early in the morning; the only problem then being that there are lots of other photographers around trying to do the same thing!
The autumn colours were quite spectacular and were reflected beautifully in the lake. At last I had an image that I was happy with. I still go back there often though just in case there’s a better shot waiting to be taken.
